The Bauman Institute

20 February 2009 | Carolyn Weaver

We are delighted to announce that the School is currently working towards the launch of the Bauman Institute for Theory and Society in Sep/Oct 2010.

Informed by the primary research themes of consumerism, social inclusion/exclusion, and ethics the Bauman Institute’s initial research priority will be to address the social impact of the global financial crisis, specifically public concern over ever-expanding cultures of credit and debt. This will include assessing the impact of these social processes on understandings of identity, citizenship, and collective responsibility, as well as the effect of increasing levels of choice on the quality of life and well-being – i.e. how liberty and choice can be reconciled with such challenges as protecting the environment and creating fairer and more stable global societies.

Building upon a strong tradition of theory and method within the School at Leeds, the Bauman Institute will make a significant contribution to achieving the University’s strategy for making a major impact upon global society.
