Council of Europe

19 May 2009 | Carolyn Weaver

Dr Mark Davis is working with the Council of Europe on a new project to create a 'Europe of shared social responsibility'.

As Lecturer in Sociology and Director of the School’s new Bauman Institute, Mark was invited to attend the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 23-24 April as part of a consultative group to identify and assess the best ways in which to respond to the related challenges of globalization, the economic crisis and climate change.

Amongst other members of the consultative group were Claus Offe, Anna Coote, Sabine Urban and Jean-Claude Barbier.

Mark’s own particular involvement was in the area of consumerism, and he was invited specifically to comment upon the need to conceptualise new forms of 'responsible consumption' and to explore the challenges to be faced in reconciling the rights to individual free (consumer) choice with the urgent need to create fairer, more stable, and more sustainable global societies.

Mark returns to Strasbourg on 15-16 June to present a paper to the Council on 'responsible consumption'.
