PhD Success in the School

03 March 2009 | Carolyn Weaver

We are delighted to announce that the School has seen the successful completion of at least 9 PhDs in the last 6 months.

The School has recently seen the fruits of its labour, for postgraduate students, academic and support staff, with a flurry of successful PhD completions. After undergoing up to four years for a full time PhD, or in some cases seven or eight for part time students, there has been a cohort of students who have handed in their thesis on time. Surviving the nerves of the viva, postgraduates have demonstrated their contributions to knowledge in areas across both sociology and social policy disciplines. These vary widely – for example, sex education policy; disability policy in Jamaica, ‘bed-blocking’ in hospitals, embryo donation, and Sri Lankan Tamils to name a few. This breadth of topics demonstrates the specialisms that the School is able to supervise, and the excellent training and support that is given to those who take up one of the hardest academic challenges possible. We say congratulations to all those recent graduates and to their supervisors too!
