Professor Colin Barnes

Professor of Disability Studies

As a disabled person and writer, I have been involved with the disabled people's movement throughout my academic career. I am a member of several local, national and international organizations controlled and run by disabled people and have conducted research on a wide range of disability issues.  

I am the founder and director of the Centre for Disability Studies, formerly the Disability Research Unit, an independent publishing house The Disability Press, and an electronic archive The Disability Archive UK.

My research interests include the following.

  • Social policy and disabled people
  • Disability politics and culture
  • Inclusive education
  • Disability and the majority world
  • Emacipatory/participatory research methodologies and practice
  • Cultural studies
  • Popular culture
  • Sociology of deviance

Teaching

I am founder and co-convenor for the School's postgraduate Disability Studies programme, both taught and distance learning schemes, and currently teach on each of the eleven programme modules. I also contribute lectures on social care and disability politics to undergraduate courses.

PhD Supervision

Since 1994, I have jointly supervised twelve PhD students and one MPhil. research student in the general area of disability studies. All submitted their theses on time and all were successful. I am currently jointly supervising eight research students for the award of PhD.
