School of Sociology and Social Policy

Dr Laura Hemingway

Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy

I completed my first degree in Social Policy and Administration at the University of Leeds, as well as my MA in Social Research and my doctoral research into the relationship between disability and housing.

I began teaching in the School in 2003 and since then, I have taught on a range of social policy and sociology modules.  Alongside teaching, I am also involved in upgrading the online resource ‘Disability Archive UK’.

Research Interests

My research interests focus mainly on issues relating to disability and housing, especially the role of the mortgage industry in access to the owner-occupied sector.

My other key research interests include disabled students’ experiences of higher education, and emergency relief for disabled people within disaster situations.

Teaching

I am currently course tutor and dissertation supervisor for the School’s MA in Disability Studies distance learning programme.  I also teach the Level 3 module ‘Housing in Urban Society’ and Level 2 ‘Crime, Law and Regulation’.

PhD Supervision

I am keen to supervise research students whose projects fall within the broad areas of disability or housing studies.
