Dr Kahryn Hughes

Senior Research Fellow

I am a Senior Research Fellow, and the Co-Director of the Families Lifecourse and Generations Research Centre (FLaG).

I previously worked in the Health Sciences and Public Health Research Centre. My research ranged from governance and quality in Complementary and Alternative Medicines, local hospitals, and community eye services, to ESRC-funded research that developed innovative methodologies to reach and recruit socially excluded individuals and groups.

Research Interests

My current projects are Intergenerational Exchange: grandparenting and social exclusion, a ESRC-funded Timescapes study, and New forms of participation: internet gambling and the role of the family under the ESRC/RIGT initiative.

My main theoretical interests lie around relational processes of identity constitution and maintenance, including those associated with practices of addiction, and theorising social networks in the context of low-income communities.

Teaching

I teach mainly within the areas of qualitative research methods, and teach on the MA Sociology of Health and Illness.

PhD Supervision

I am keen to supervise students that have an interest in areas that broadly overlap with my own substantive interests, and who are keen to explore the uses of different qualitative methodologies.
