Dr Katy Sian

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

I completed my Ph.D at the University of Leeds in December 2009. My doctoral research explores the persistence of Sikh and Muslim conflict in the context of postcolonial settlement in Britain.

I am currently working on a collaborative research project exploring the semantics of tolerance and (anti-) racism in Europe to understand how such meanings are shaped through the mediation of civil society organisations and public institutions and policies.

Research Interests

I take a key interest in debates surrounding Racism and Ethnicity Studies, Inter-Ethnic Conflict, Inter-BrAsian Relations, Critical Race Theory, Critical Sikh Studies, Postcolonialism, Poststructuralism, Cultural Studies, South Asian Identity and Diaspora.

Teaching

I have taught on modules including sociological thinking, deviance, crime and social control and introduction to racism and ethnicity. I am currently teaching on ethnicity and popular culture.

PhD Supervision

I am happy to supervise students in the areas of my research interests.
