FLOWS The impact of local welfare systems on female labour force participation and social cohesion

This major new multinational study is led by Prof. Per Jensen at the University of Aalborg. It is a partnership project involving 11 EU states, plus a collaboration with an expert research team in Taiwan.

The partners will study women's labour force participation, local welfare systems and social inclusion in a selected city in each country. CIRCLE will be studying the city of Leeds.

The aim of the project is to analyse how local provision affects the labour market participation of women and how female employment in turn affects the life-course (of women and men), impacts on structures of inequality and social cohesion, and hence has implications for the sustainability of the European social model.

At CIRCLE, the project will be led by Professor Sue Yeandle and will involve...

  • detailed analysis of statistical data on the Leeds economy
  • interviews andfocus groups with a range of people involved in providing jobs, training and support services in Leeds
  • a survey of women resident in the Leeds area
  • a conference in Leeds to debate emerging issues.

The research will be carried out in parallel in the other 11 cities under study, and planned publications include a range of comparative analyses as well as output focused specifically on the city of Leeds.
