NIHR Improving employment opportunities for carers

NIHR Improving employment opportunities for carers: identifying and sharing good practice (2011-2013)

  • Funded by NIHR School for Social Care Research
  • This project will run from July 2011 until November 2013

This study is a collaboration between CIRCLE at the University of Leeds and The Institute For Employment Studies (IES), each taking responsibility for different parts of the research.

The part of the study conducted by CIRCLE will collect, assess and synthesise evidence of what works in supporting carer employment, with the aim of producing guidance suitable for use in social care England-wide.

It will evaluate the services and explore the relative effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different models and what works well for whom. It will also consider how well different agencies co-operate, how different initiatives interlink, and the impact of new/emerging policy agendas. Case studies of recent or ongoing effective practice will be undertaken in a range of localities with a track record of innovation in supporting carer employment.

The study will begin with scoping interviews with experts, a mapping of services providing employment support to carers, case-study work including interviews and focus groups (with staff, groups and carers involved), a survey of recent participants, a review of monitoring and evaluative output, and secondary analysis of local labour market conditions for carers.
