The School of Sociology and Social Policy is pleased to announce the launch of the Equality and Social Justice Lecture Series at the University of Leeds.
This annual lecture celebrates scholars working at the intersection of academia and activism in the field of equality and social justice. The lecture series provides a platform for scholarly activists who not only seek to better understand, but also change, the social world we live in.
Co-hosted with the Centre for Disabilities Studies, the first lecture will be delivered by University of East Anglia’s Professor of Disability Research, Tom Shakespeare. With research interests in disability studies, medical sociology and the social and ethical aspects of genetics, Professor Shakespeare has been highly influential in contributing towards the disabled people’s movement in the UK and internationally. Having previously been a member of Arts Council England and worked for the World Health Organisation, Professor Shakespeare has had longstanding involvement in improving public understanding of disability, as well as the policies, institutions and practices that shape its experience.
The title of Professor Shakespeare’s lecture is: “Levers of success; understanding the achievements of African people with disabilities”.

The lecture will be followed by a wine reception courtesy of the School of Sociology and Social Policy and the Centre for Disability Studies.
