FLaG: Families, Life Course and Generations Research Centre

Centre for Research on Families, Life Course and Generations (FLaG)

The Centre for Research on Families, Life Course and Generations (FLaG) is an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and research users interested in families, life course trajectories and transitions and intergenerational relationships.

The Centre brings together an extensive network of academics from across, and beyond, the University of Leeds, from postgraduates to leaders in their field. Methodological innovation provides another binding interest of many members of FLaG, reflected in the range of events that we run.

Several members of FLaG have a profile of methodological research  -- including, for example, research funded through the National Centre for Research Methods -- and a commitment to methods training and capacity building in the UK. This is part of the platform through which we are carrying forward research in current projects.

Our research projects

Our members work on a range of research projects, large and small. Our biggest current undertaking is ESRC Timescapes: Changing Relationships and Identities through the Life Course (2007-12), involving colleagues at Leeds and other UK universities.

Timescapes is part of ESRC's Qualitative Longitudinal Initiative, and uses qualitative methods to explore how people’s identities and relationships with significant others unfold over biographical, generational and historical time. Another growing area of interest within FLaG is in the domain of education and social inequalities.

Our events

Together, FlaG and Timescapes provide an extensive programme of methods training to social scientists, practitioners and policy makers across the UK.

We currently run various one-off activities, including our second annual research methods event, held in September 2010 and run jointly with the Social Policy Association and the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds.

We also run seminar series, workshops and a postgraduate/postdoctoral research group. Researchers in this cluster have strong and enduring links with policy makers across government and the voluntary sector, and are involved in international collaborations on family and life course research, and qualitative methods.
