Leisure and sports facilities at the University of Leeds

Sports facilities

The university has three sports centres on campus: the Main Sports Centre, Gryphon Sports Centre and Cromer Terrace Fitness Studio.

These facilities include sports halls, indoor and outdoor 5-a-side courts, squash courts, a six badminton court hall with a performance floor, a climbing wall, a freeweights room with powerracks, lifting platforms and a full range of weight plates and dumbbells, and a state of the art fitness suite with treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes and Precor resistance equipment.

There are also regular exercise classes held on campus from circuit training to aerobics, yoga and pilates.

We are also in the process of building a £11.5 million, 25m, eight lane swimming pool and fitness complex on campus that will boast a sauna and steam room, and a cafe.

Our health and fitness team also offer personal inductions, personal training plans, gym challenges and Body MOTs. The University also has an Injury and Rehabilitation clinic within the main sports centre that offers Physiotherapy and Sports Massage.

The University also has 100 acres of playing fields at Weetwood, about 3 miles from campus. This facility includes a new Tiger Turf sand dressed artificial pitch, a newly re-surfaced sand dressed artificial hockey pitch, a new 3G rubber crumb pitch, test match standard cricket pitches, and  a high quality refurbished grass pitches for a variety of activities, including American Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Rounders, Lacrosse, Football and Rugby.

The University also runs two outdoor centres: the Selside Centre in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Dale Head in the Lake District National Park.

Amenities

We have a fifteen cafes on campus, including the new fairtrade Cafe Maia and the hot wrap bar Wrapid to the £4.5 million newly refurbished state-of-the-art refectory that includes a Hot Wok and Noodle Bar, and a Grab and Go service where you can choose from fresh salads, soups, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and oriental style dishes.  

Our student union building at the heart of campus also has three bars, two of which serve food, three music venues, one live music venue, a smoothy and coffee bar, a mini supermarket that sells vegetarian, halal and south east asian food, a pasty shop and convenience shop.  The union building also has an independent sushi bar and a salad bar.

Other cafes, restaurants and bars skirt the campus grounds, particularly by the main entrance to campus.

We have a number of ATMs in the Student Union Building, and there are two bank branches opposite the main entrance to the University.

The Student Union building at the centre of campus also has a card shop, two clothes shops, a hairdressers, a bookshop and an opticians.


Theatre on campus

Stage@Leeds is a public, licensed theatre complex on campus with a 180 seat auditorium, a 50 seat studio theatre and a dance studio. The complex runs a regular programme of theatre, music and dance.
