The Brotherton Library

University libraries

There are multiple libraries on campus including the magnificent Brotherton Library, the Edward Boyle Library and the new Laidlaw library. Opening times vary throughout the year. Around exam and assignment periods we extend opening times (with the Laidlaw opening 24/7)

In the libraries, there are silent areas to think, group study areas to discuss and work together, and technology to get online. At information points in each library building, you will find helpful, friendly library staff to answer all your questions. There is also a specialist librarian for each subject area.

Online library services

You can use many of the library services online, both on and off campus: for example, you can type in the title or author of a book and see whether the library has the book and where you can find it. You can look for books on a subject even if you don't know the title.

You can also check library opening times; renew books you have on loan; find module reading lists and other lists of useful resources for your subject; and find out about free training sessions in the Skills@Library workshop programme.

IT facilities

Don't worry if you don't have your own PC, Information Systems Services (ISS) provides over 1,800 computers in 36 clusters (computer rooms) around campus. Most clusters have long opening hours, and there are over 400 PCs available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Internet access is also provided at most halls of residence. Your username enables you to use any networked PC around the campus, as well as the student Portal and your own email address. You can access your email through Webmail wherever you are in the world!
