Please tell us a bit about yourself and your background.

I'm 21 years old, and currently completing my final year studying sociology. I was born and bred in North Wales and am a fluent Welsh speaker.

What motivated you to apply to study your chosen course and why did you choose Leeds?

I had not studied sociology before but was interested in the breadth of topics that the subject included. I chose Leeds because I fell in love with it after attending an open day. I loved the feel of the campus but also the fact that it was in close proximity to the city centre. I also wanted to participate in a study abroad year why I chose the University of Leeds.

What do you think of your course, have there been any particular highlights for you?

I thoroughly enjoy my course as it has taught me to think critically about the social world. There is a freedom to choose the modules that are most appealing and so I can structure my course around my interests. My highlight has been my year studying abroad at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark which was an unforgettable experience.

How would you describe the help and guidance provided by the staff within the School?

The guidance and help provided by the staff within the school has been very useful. Each tutor has an 'open door' session every week, which is an allocated time to drop in and see them without booking an appointment.

How would you describe the facilities at the University?

The facilities at the University are great. There are plenty of computer clusters across campus that provide printing facilities. The library facilities are particularly excellent, which have rooms that accommodate all different types of studying. The Students’’ Union is also a great place for eating and drinking with friends.

Have you had the opportunity to study abroad, or complete a year in industry? If so, please tell us about your experience.

I spent a year studying abroad at the University of Copenhagen. My experience was amazing, and I loved every minute. I met some great people from all over the world, developing some key skills adapting to Danish culture. The sociology course there was very interesting as it provided a Scandinavian perspective to the topics I had studied in Leeds.

Have you been involved in extra-curricular activities, such as societies, summer placements etc?

I was a member of the Sociology Society 'SocSoc' in my second year, where I undertook the role of both social and sports secretary. This role involved starting a netball team to play in the intramural league against other courses. It also involved organising social activities such as nights out, aimed to include everyone on the course from all years.
