Profile

I really enjoy working within the School and I am  Programme Leader for the BA Social Science programme.

I enjoy working in partnership with staff and students to enhance the student experience and to ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

I am interested in issues surrounding widening participation in higher education, for example, in relation to student retention and the educational experiences of people that have experienced public care as children. In addition, I am interested in social and political theory, in particular, democratic theory.

Student education

I teach on our BA Social Science programme and at undergraduate Levels 1, 2 and 3.  I was awarded a University of Leeds Teaching Fellowship which I used to establish the Sociology in Action Project. The aim of the project is to build an active and mutually beneficial community of local organisations, students and academics who work together to encourage positive social change. The project draws on the combined expertise, enthusiasm and knowledge of all its partners.

The project has contributed to enhancing the employability of our undergraduate students as it provides the opportunity for up to 30 of our Level 2 students undertake a research project in collaboration with the third sector or Leeds City Council as part of their undergraduate studies. I am hoping to build on the success of the project and to continue to expand the school's civic engagement.

I am also a founding member of Changing Communities a student led initiative to promote inclusivity across the University.
