Dr Sarah Marusek
I am a native New Yorker who comes to Leeds via Johannesburg. Originally, I was based in the humanities and my religion was art, music and literature; however, while working in these fields I encountered a spiritual crisis and found solace in Islam and decolonial resistance frameworks. I received my PhD in social science from Syracuse University, MA in International Affairs from The New School and BA in literature and art history from Goldsmiths.
I am inspired by theologies of liberation, focusing primarily on Critical Muslim Studies. I have conducted ethnographies of Islamic activism in Iran, Lebanon and Senegal, and co-authored several research reports on Islamophobia with Spinwatch.
