Research Postgraduates
We offer three kinds of research degree for postgraduate students.
The main distinction between these three lies in the length of time devoted to earning the degrees, and in the scope of the work undertaken and the extent of the training input.
An important variation is the 1+3 ESRC scheme that encompasses a one year MA and three years of PhD study.
Research at the School of Sociology and Social Policy
The School of Sociology and Social Policy at Leeds offers an array of opportunities for graduate research work.
Throughout its existence, the School has been a major centre of research and graduate training, and PhDs from Leeds can now be found at senior academic levels throughout Britain and the world.
Britain's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognises our programme of social research training, and our research record received the second highest position in the country in terms of 'world-leading' research (4*) in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
Our research centres
The School houses four major research centres.
- Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies (CERS)
- Centre for Research on Family, Life Course and Generations (FLAG)
- Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities (CIRCLE)

- The Bauman Institute
The School is also home to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Research Group for the Study of Care, Values and the Future of Welfare (CAVA) and enjoys a close collaborative relationship with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies.
