School of Sociology and Social Policy

Care, caring and employment

The School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Leeds hosted the internationally-recognised ESRC Research Group on Care, Values and the Future of Welfare (CAVA) from 1999-2005, and is committed to a continuing programme of research in the field of care, caring and employment.

Directed by Professor Fiona Williams, CAVA conducted a programme of qualitative research into the values attached to parenting and partnering. Its research contributed to an influential theoretical critique of individualisation; new accounts of commitment, personal relationships and family change; new methodologies for researching 'geography of family formations' and new policy perspectives on the personal and political ethics of care.

CAVA members then initiated two subsequent major ESRC investments in the School - the Real Lives Methods and Timescapes projects - to carry forward its qualitative work on personal and social relationships.

Fiona Williams and Sue Yeandle established the Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities (CIRCLE) in 2006. The centre takes forward a new programme of research building on both CAVA and Sue Yeandle's portfolio of work relating to gender, care and employment, which included the Gender and Employment in Local Labour Markets programme (GELLM) that she directed between 2003 and 2006 at Sheffield Hallam University.

CIRCLE currently hosts Dr Shona Hunter's RCUK Fellowship on the relational politics of diversity policy making.
