Gender and sexuality
Gender and sexuality are key analytical dimensions in much of the research in the School of Sociology and Social Policy.
Researchers in the School are engaged in a range of projects on sexuality and the sex trade, notably Sally Hines' work on identities and care in transgender communities, Jackie Sanchez Taylor's work on sex tourism and Teela Sander's influential work on prostitution. Anne Kerr and Lisa Garforth are also the UK partners in the European Union Framework 6 project on Knowledge, Gender and Institutions: An East West Comparison.
Gender is an important dimension of other research in the School on family, care, ethnicity and disability, notably in relation to discrimination, identity, the body, work and intimacy. Researchers are involved in developing the School’s links with policy makers, and critically engaging with policy making on gender mainstreaming, assisted conception, prostitution and transgender in particular.
The School also has strong links with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (Gender Studies) at the University of Leeds. Gender Studies has become a leading international centre for postgraduate gender studies, hosts a major annual lecture series and has strong external links with a range of organisations.
