Developing a clearer understanding of the Carer’s Allowance Claimant Group
September 2009 - September 2010
This study of the lives and circumstances of people receiving Carers Allowance was commissioned by the DWP in autumn 2009.
The study was conducted from 2009 to 2110 and included …
- a review of relevant academic and policy literature
- a questionnaire survey of a sample of approximately 500 current Carers Allowance recipients
- discussion group meetings in a range oflocalities in England and Scotland with carers drawn from the survey sample
- analysis of DWP statistics relating to this customer group.
A report based on the study findings was submitted to DWP in Autumn 2010. On 26 May 2011, a new research report, written by Gary Fry, Benedict Singleton, Sue Yeandle and Lisa Buckner, looking at the recipients of Carer’s Allowance was published by the Department of Work and Pensions.
The report offers insights into carers’ lives, the difficulties they experience, the formal services and informal support networks to which they have access, and their aspirations around paid employment and having a life of their own.
