The New Generation: Chinese childhoods

Completion Date: 30 September 2010

Investigations into the experiences of Chinese people in Britain have rarely attracted the attention of researchers, and available research and literature is arguably based on stereotypical constructions of the Chinese as collectivist and conformist whilst assuming that traditional values and practices remain influential.

Complicating the matter further is the emergence of a British-educated and British born Chinese generation. How will this impact the family and childhood experiences of Chinese children today, where Chinese parents are informed by both Chinese and British cultures?

As the research is concerned with different aspects of British Chinese children's lives in different contexts, the research is interdisplinary in its approach, including work from sociology, psychology and education.
