BA Social Science Course Content
Level Zero splits across two semesters. The first semester covers the compulsory modules detailed below, while students can choose optional modules to study in the second semester.
In Social Divisions in Contemporary British Society, you explore the key social divisions in British society, including class, gender, race and ethnicity and disability.
Traditions of Thought in Social Science will encourage you to use key ideas in social and political thought to explain social change, and critically assess existing social institutions.

Study Skills provides you with an introduction to the practical skills, such as time management, effective reading, note-taking, essay-writing and exam preparation, that successful undergraduate study requires.
Reflective Learning gives you the opportunity to record and reflect on your achievements throughout the year, as well as providing advice on which degree programme would most suit you.
Finally, Introduction to IT and Computing Skills introduces you to the IT, research and learning skills appropriate for degree-level work.
You also choose two optional modules from the list below to complete the course programme.
- Thinking about Disability
- Introduction to Politics
- Race and Ethnicity
- Introduction to Crime and Criminal Justice

What our students say
“At the age of 35, I had been working in the building trade for nearly twenty years but I had always had a yearning to do something more.
Having left school with only two O-levels, I rang the University to ask what I would need to do to study and I was invited in to meet the staff.
To my surprise, after meeting with staff in the School of Sociology and Social Policy I was offered,a place on the foundation degree. Throughout the course, the tutors were really helpful and my skills, including writing skills and computer skills improved over time.It was initially very daunting, however once I arrived and settled in I gained in confidence. The course helped me to remain focused and re-gain my life."
Howard Trewhitt (former BA Social Science student who has progressed to the BA International Relations and MA Conflict, Development and Security courses).
